Brief Introduction

Dr. Brummel-Smith has been a leader in geriatrics for over 20 years. He served as chief of the division of geriatrics at two medical schools (University of Southern California and Oregon Health Sciences University). He is a co-editor or author of five textbooks, Geriatric Rehabilitation (Pro-Ed Press, 1990), Practical Ambulatory Geriatrics (Mosby Year Book, 1998, 2nd ed), Interviewing and Patient Care (Oxford Univ Press, 1996), and Geriatric Assessment (McGraw-Hill, 2000), and Reichel’s Care of the Elderly (Cambridge University, in press). He has written numerous chapters and articles in the area of geriatrics and geriatric rehabilitation. He also served on the committee to develop the first certification examination for geriatric physicians. He has been selected 8 times by his peers as a member of the “Best Doctors in America.” He is a member of the National Advisory Council on Aging for the National Institute on Aging. He is the chairman of the board of Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs. He is a past-president of the American Geriatrics Society. He is frequently called upon to provide interviews to the media and has been interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Parade Magazine and appeared on Science Friday with Ira Flatow and 60 Minutes with Ed Bradley. He graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, did a residency in family medicine at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and a fellowship in the Department of Medical Education at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He is board certified in Family Medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. He is a Fellow of the American Geriatric Society.
