Reader in Analytical Biochemistry

Current Activities
Sam Tothill leads the analytical biochemistry research activity within Cranfield Health, with a group of approximately eight doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Her current interests centre on the advanced diagnostics and sensors arena, with research, teaching and consultancy activities covering the medical, foods and environmental sectors.
Dr Tothill main research interests are:
• molecular recognition, sensing and diagnostics development
• nanotechnology/application in analytical and life sciences
• the use of bioinformatics tools for novel artificial receptor
design and discovery
• enzymology/biocatalysis.

Sam is a member of the Biochemical Society (UK), member on the editorial advisory board of the British Journal of Medical Practitioners (BJMP), Member on the editorial board of the Journal of Biological Physics and Chemistry (JBPC) and member of the BioSIG steering Group (Sensors and Instrumentation KTN) and the Society of Authors. In addition she has served as MSc Course Director, Associate Dean for the Facility of Medicine and Biosciences and as a Director for SWIG Ltd.

Background
Sam has a PhD in Analytical Biochemistry from Cranfield University, where she conducted original research in enzyme catalysis and their application in biotechnology and diagnostics developments. She has an MSc in Microbial Biochemistry and was awarded the top student award for her BSc degree.
